How to Obtain Correct Layout for Non-Standard Sash or Glass Heights
Determing Rail and Bar Widths, Glass Heights, and Sash Height

On special sash which do not have even inch glass heights, or do not have standard rail and bar widths, you will have to specify the following information in order to have the sash properly set-out.

On the left side of the sketch, the face-measures of the top rail, center bar, and bottom rail are shown along with the glass opening heights of the top and bottom lights.  Please note that the sum of these 5 dimensions MUST equal the overall sash height.  Top rail FM + Top glass opening height + Bar FM + Bottom glass opening height + Bottom rail FM = Sash Height

Note:  Standard glass opening widths and heights are even inches + 1/16"   (For Western sash, glass opening widths are even inches + 1/16" and heights are even or odd inches + 1/16")

On the right side of the sketch, the Finish Widths of the top rail, center bar, and bottom rail are shown along with the daylight opening heights of the top and bottom lights.  Please note that the sum of these 5 dimensions MUST equal the overall sash height.  Top rail finish width + Top daylight opening height + Bar finish width + Bottom daylight opening height + Bottom rail finish width = Sash Height

Specify which measurements you are providing- Face Measures and Glass Opening sizes, OR, Finish Widths and Daylight Opening sizes.  Be sure the math works- Total must equal sum of the parts.

Note: Standard sticking and glass rabbets are 3/16" wide, therefore the difference between the glass opening size and the daylight opening size is 3/8".  The difference between the face-measure and the finish width of the sash bar is 3/8".  The difference between the face-measure and the finish width of a stile or rail is 3/16".  For western sash, the sticking and glass rabbets are 1/4" wide, therefore the differences listed above are 1/2" and 1/4" respectively.
